Apo Hiking Society, commonly known as Apo, was a popular Filipino musical group formed in 1969 by Danny Javier, Jim Paredes, and Boboy Garovillo. The trio was known for their unique blend of folk, pop, and rock music, as well as their socially conscious lyrics and harmonious vocal arrangements.
The group's name "Apo" is derived from the highest peak in the Philippines, Mount Apo, which symbolizes their aspirations for excellence and success. Apo began their career performing in local clubs and bars in Manila, gradually building a loyal following with their catchy tunes and heartfelt lyrics.
Apo released their first album, "Campus Folk Songs," in 1973, which featured original compositions as well as covers of popular folk songs. The album was a critical and commercial success, and Apo went on to release numerous hit albums over the next two decades.
Some of Apo's most popular songs include "Batang-Bata Ka Pa," "Ewan," "Yakap Sa Dilim," and "Paano." The group also gained international recognition, performing in various countries around the world and collaborating with other notable artists.
Aside from their music, Apo was also known for their advocacy work and social commentary. They often used their platform to raise awareness of social issues, such as poverty and environmental conservation, and became influential voices in the Philippine music scene.
In 2010, after over 40 years of performing together, Apo announced their retirement from the music industry with a final concert titled "Apo Hiking Society: The Final Set." Today, their music continues to inspire and resonate with generations of Filipinos, cementing their place as one of the most iconic and influential musical groups in Philippine history.
